5 Steps to Finding a Family Doctor in BC
Finding a family doctor in British Columbia can feel overwhelming — but there are practical steps you can take today.
Finding a family doctor in British Columbia can feel overwhelming — but there are practical steps you can take. Here's a practical guide to connecting with a physician who's accepting new patients.
Step 1: Use Find a Doctor BC. Start with our clinic search to find practices in your area that are currently accepting patients. Filter by city, acceptance status, and clinic type to narrow down your options.
Step 2: Contact Clinics Directly. Once you've found a few candidates, call or email them directly. Ask: Are you accepting new patients? Are you accepting patients in my age group?
Step 3: Register with Health Connect Registry. BC's Health Connect Registry allows you to add your name to a waitlist for an available family doctor in your health authority.
Step 4: Consider Walk-In Clinics as a Bridge. If you need care while you wait for a family doctor, walk-in clinics can provide non-emergency medical care.
Step 5: Consider Nurse Practitioners. Nurse Practitioners can provide much of the same primary care as a family doctor. Many BC clinics with NPs are accepting patients.
